As the wheel of the year turns once more, we arrive at Ostara, the sabbat of balance, rebirth, and the gentle unfolding of spring. Marking the Spring Equinox—when day and night stand in perfect harmony—Ostara reminds us that light is returning, and with it comes growth, hope, and new beginnings.
Rooted in ancient Germanic and Anglo-Saxon traditions, Ostara honors the goddess Ēostre, from whom both the festival and the word "Easter" draw their name. She’s a deity of dawn, fertility, and renewal, often symbolized by hares and eggs—emblems that still echo today in mainstream springtime traditions.
Ostara is a time of fertile energy. Buds swell on branches, birds return with song, and the earth seems to exhale after winter’s long slumber. It’s a moment to plant seeds—both literally and metaphorically. Whether you're sowing herbs in your garden, crafting a new project, or setting fresh intentions, this sabbat encourages forward motion and inspired action.
This spring has seen me make some decisions. While I'm still looking for corporate employment, I'm adding bookkeeping to my repertoire, and rearranging things in my home to hopefully better suit my crafting, and my mental health.
It's also been a challenging month. Normally the week of the solstices or equinoxes I struggle with sleep. For whatever reason this year I haven't slept solidly through the night since about the third week of February. I'm hoping as Ostara passes I'll be able to sleep better. How have you been doing the last few weeks? Is spring cleaning in full swing for you?
